I’m so excited to have Kim from Life Over C’s guest posting today and sharing an ADORABLE and FREE counting printable with you!
This year we have been working hard to teach my special needs preschooler how to count. She doesn’t really understand the concept of just randomly counting objects, so I wanted to create a more concrete example of counting for her and you get to enjoy the results! This free printable for counting to 5 with frogs & flies is perfect for kids who are starting to count, but need direction.

Materials needed for this free printable for counting to 5:
- Paper and/or card stock
- Laminating pouches & laminator (optional)
- Clear Velcro dots
- Scissors
Print the frogs & flies file that is available below. Laminate if desired. (I almost always laminate things I’m using with my daughter because I want to be able to use them multiple times.)
Cut apart the frog cards and the individual flies.
Attach one Velcro dot to the back of each fly and attach the opposite side of the Velcro pair to each of the squares above the frogs.
Then, have your child help the frogs “catch” the right number of flies!
I love this activity because each numbered frog has a definite stopping point. Unlike counting everything in sight or even counting the number of things on a page, the child can easily see that there is no more room for extra flies. (When counting on a page, children often count the same objects more than once.)
Plus, this activity is great for building hand strength which is great for fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination as they work to get the flies into the squares.
Here are some other counting activities that your child will enjoy!
- Count the stars in this beautiful night sky sensory bin!
- Practice counting with real life objects such as the apples in your fruit bowl.
- Want to cool off? Count penguins while playing with play dough.

A great book to incorporate with Frogs and Flies and Counting to 5 is The Little Green Frog by Bridgett Henderson. It is set in rhyme, bright pages for young readers. It would be great to read that story and follow up with Frog and Flies and Counting to 5!
Thanks for that suggestion! I’ll have to check out that book!
