Before toddlers even know their color names, they can begin color matching. While we have several toys in our home that we use to do this {you can see the ones we use the most at the end of this post}, Easter eggs make the perfect {and super cheap} manipulative to do some color matching with toddlers. It also makes for great fine motor work, building those muscles for writing!
Easter Egg Color Matching with Toddlers
All you need to do is pull out several plastic eggs. The number and color of the eggs you choose depends on the skills of your toddler. You could make it more difficult by pulling eggs that have patterns or are different in color by shade (light green and dark green together). I chose two shades of blue, which were a bit challenging for NSis {currently 2 years, 1 month old} at first.
Separate all the eggs and mix them up in a bowl or open container so your child can see all of them. Place the container in front of your toddler and model how to match up a color. Use color language: “I’m matching up the yellow egg.”
Set her free to try it herself, providing guidance when needed. So simple!
