Books for the Letter V

The letter v books feature these letter v words: vegetable, vacuum cleaner, vehicle(s), very, violin, & volcano.

Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert is a very simple book about a child planting vegetable seeds with his dad, watching them grow, harvesting them, then using them to make vegetable soup. As a stand-alone book, it wasn’t a huge favorite in our home; but I mixed in our velcro vegetables on the page where the child and the dad cut the vegetables and the book took on more dimension, especially for my youngest child {3 years old}.

Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas is a charming rhyming book that may seem to have nothing to do with the letter v. That is until Bob opens his mouth to rhyme with cat by saying, “VACUUM CLEANER!” This book will have your kids in stitches…and not just the first time you read it together. It’s probably one of my preschooler’s favorite books to read. {And it’s the perfect one to read before bedtime because it’s short….hehe.}

While I could have featured The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Lonely Firefly, or The Very Quiet Cricket, I chose to feature The Very Busy Spider only because I haven’t featured it in one of my letter of the week book lists so far. Apart from The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Grouchy Ladybug, this book is probably one of my favorite Eric Carle books. The predictable text and animal noises, make it a great fit for tots and preschoolers or when you’re doing a farm unit.

This National Geographic Kids book, Volcanoes!, is honestly more than my tot will sit through, but I’ve yet to find another nonfiction book on volcanoes that works better. The photographs are engaging and there’s just enough text that my 3rd grader, who is a struggling reader, enjoyed reading it by himself this past school year {several times}.

Speaking of volcanoes, My Mouth is a Volcano! by Julia Cook is probably a book best for preschool and up. The overall goal of the book is to help kids learn not to interrupt, but the author does so in such a cute way. I’d also recommend this book for older, special needs students, like my 4th grader who is High Functioning Autistic.

Zin! Zin! Zin! a Violin by Lloyd Moss is another book that younger kids may enjoy, but I’ve found that it most appeals to my 4 year old and up. I love all the vocabulary that mixed in with this book, from musical terms to new words that will expand your kids’ knowledge and play of words. Such a great book for so many reasons!

vehicle books for the letter v by This Reading Mama

Listed below are a few old and new vehicle books that kids are sure to love. I will warn you, though, that I refuse to read Cars and Trucks and Things that Go when it’s bedtime. It’s WAY too long. But it’s been a GREAT one for the doctor’s office wait or on long car trips.

  • Away we Go! by Chieu Anh Urban- a play book with shapes and vehicles {read our review}
  • Whose Vehicle Is This? by Sharon Katz Cooper – a vehicle guessing game book
  • Cars and Trucks and Things that Go by Richard Scarry – a CLASSIC and a MUST- HAVE for your shelves at home! Can you find Goldbug on each page?
  • Let’s Talk About Vehicles by Ronne Randall – my kids love the illustrations in this book, we have a couple of vehicle books with this illustrator
