When I showed my boys the Christmas Word Bump! this past week, I heard a “Yes!” from both of them. {Gotta love those moments when the mama can sneak in a way to practice spelling words that looks like play to her kids.}
The free download link is at the end of this post and includes three word game levels for 1 die, 2 dice, and 3 dice. Look for the teal download button.
Last month, I introduced Thanksgiving Word Bump! to my boys and they absolutely loved it! {Click HERE to read more about how to play.}
Practice Spelling Words {New and Old}
I printed off the word list template for both boys and jotted down 12 words for each of them. My 5 year old was given review words from Reading the Alphabet as well as a few new words he’s studied as we’ve gone through Set 1 of the BOB Books. My 8 year old was given a list with his five sight words for the week and some older sight words he needed to review a bit more.
Each one chose their colored dry erase marker and the game began. They really got into erasing each others’ words this time.
Because our Thanksgiving Word Bump! lasted so long, I decided to set a 15-minute timer this time. Once the time was up, we counted who had the most words written and my older was declared the winner.
Word Bump! Works Well Because…
- it can be played with children on the same level OR children on different levels of word learning because you can customize each child’s spelling list.
- you can include phonics words like cat and ran or wait and brain. It doesn’t just have to be sight words.
- it is not a game of strategy, but of luck. Therefore, kids can play with adults or other students who are not “on their level”.
- it helps kids practice spelling words through meaningful and multiple exposure
- it gets kids writing their words

Oh….Rose and Amelia are going to be excited!
I’m so glad! Have a great day! You deserve one. 🙂
Very creative, Becky! Excellent.
Thank you
Pam
I enjoy your activities so much! Thanks for doing such wonderful work, and sharing for free!
How does it work with just one kid?
I don’t think so. Two would have to play. I play with my child sometimes. 🙂
