Tips and Tricks for Teaching Elementary-Age Kids {and After School Link Up}

By thisreadingmama 3 Comments

Last week, several posts caught my eye at the After School Link Up related to teaching kids. I’d like to feature a few tips and tricks for teaching elementary-age kids today. If you teach your child at home in any capacity, you will want to visit these posts.

worksheets good bad and ugly Are worksheets good or bad? I love The Measured Mom’s post on worksheets and agree wholeheartedly with her. I can remember my teaching days, watching a certain teacher in our school lay out her pages and pages of worksheets for morning work every morning. Yuck! While worksheets have a place, I also do not believe they should be our kids’ main diet.

Study Strategies to help kids remember sight words and spelling words. Homework help.

Fantastic Fun and Learning shares some tips for making spelling practice more engaging and fun for kids. Love it!

Enjoying Art With Your Children (Part 2)

Art. This has to be my 3 year old’s favorite thing and probably my downfall. If you feel that your art instruction or teaching at home needs some brushing up, be sure to read Rediscovered Families’ posts (part 1 and part 2) on enjoying art with your children.

What kinds of questions should we be asking our children after kids have studied a topic or read a book? Deeper level questions for sure! I love how Student Led Learning discusses how to do this in simple ways…just by how you form your questions.

reading fluency
