I enjoy many Dr. Seuss books and so do my kids. One of my many favorites has got to be There’s a Wocket in My Pocket .  I love all the silly words and creatures sprinkled on every page. And this books lends itself naturally to a fun rhyming scavenger hunt around the house.

Before reading the book, we talked about real and silly words and I read a few of the silly words aloud like wocket, zelf, and yeps. After a good laugh, we read the book aloud, looking for the silly words and silly creatures. We also talked about how much rhyming we could hear in the story.

drawing characters for the rhyming scavenger huntAfter reading, I asked NJoy (currently 4 years old) to draw some silly creatures. He jumped right in, drawing all kinds of crazy looking things.

Once they were cut out, I hid them around the house. I gave him partial rhyming clues to help him find them. {He had to fill in the rest of rhyme and find the creature.}

He had such a blast doing this!  He and his brother played this game for the rest of the day {quite literally} here and there. It was really fun to observe!
