The Role of Syllables in Reading and Spelling {The Tutor House Guest Post}

The Tutor House

Today I am so excited to have Adrianne, from The Tutor House, guest posting.  I just recently “met” her via a tutor chat and we had a blast together, despite our technical difficulties.  She has a lot of experience with tutoring struggling readers and I’m honored to have her share some teaching advice AND A FREEBIE!

As a tutor, when a new student comes to me for reading help, I often see that they have trouble with decoding.  I’ve learned over the years that revisiting syllables can be a great help in both decoding and spelling.  It’s not something we cover just once, but talk about before reading and after.

Reading Rockets says it best, “Dividing words into parts, or “chunks” helps speed the process of decoding. Knowing the rules for syllable division can help students read words more accurately and fluently. It can also help students learn to spell words correctly.”

Poke n’ Peek Syllables

Making syllables fun to work with can be a little tricky.  My students tire of worksheets after a long day at school.  I try my best to come up with games that will engage them.  In this freebie game, students look at the picture, say the word, and then poke a straw through a matching numbered hole to identify the syllables.

Download Poke n’ Peek Syllables and start having fun with syllables!  There are several ideas for syllables found on Reading Rockets website and also right here on This Reading Mama.

    Thanks for having me Becky! I know my post was short, but sometimes you just don’t need more words to tell folks how to work with syllables. I wish you a happy week!

      I thought you did an amazing job! Yes, sometimes extra words just cheapen the message…your length was perfect! 😉

    Fabulous activity. I have been looking today for fun things to put in my workboxes. This one is great. I just love your printables. Thanks for making them free for all us poor home educators. Much appreciation.
