Description
Year-long centers are my absolute favorite way to structure literacy centers into the class. And when I discovered how to incorporate student choice into my centers {instead of rotating learners at my centers and changing centers activities out every day}, I really began to get my evenings and weekends back. Woot!
Visual Literacy Center Menu {A Google Drive Resource}
If you choose to use the free choice idea with your year-long literacy centers, a visual literacy center menu is a MUST! This can help tremendously with managing your learners.
Even if you choose to rotate learners at each center, a visual literacy center menu can be the perfect fit for certain learners, like ELL or those with special needs.
The best part about this Google Drive resource is you can copy, paste, drag/drop to completely custom create your visual center work menu. When you have it as you’d like, just print it out. And when you need to change it, you don’t need to get out the scissors and tape. Just hop back into your Google Slides, change it up, and then print it out.
I highly recommend using broad topics if you don’t want to change out your menu often, so that lots of activities can fit under each.
The 40+ literacy center “cards” you can pick from include more broad ones like:
- ABC
- comprehension
- drama
- listening
- pocket chart
- poetry
- reading
- technology
- word work
- writing
For some learners, including the broad centers on their visual menu may be a too abstract. It may help you with managing these learners if they have more concrete and specific activities on their menu.
So, these are the more specific center options:
- big books
- board {SMARTboard}
- buddy reading
- computer
- creative writing
- discovery {integrating science}
- dramatic play
- fluency
- games
- grammar
- journal writing
- letter tiles
- magnetic letters
- nonfiction
- phonics
- playdough
- publishing
- puppets
- puzzles
- read & think
- read & write
- read the room
- read to self
- retelling
- seat work
- sight words
- small group
- sticky stix {Wikki Stix}
- tablet
- vocabulary
- write the room
- writing response
- your choice {free choice center}
