Question: What’s more fun that writing your spelling words five times each? Answer: Playing a fun game to practice spelling words. Not only is it more fun, but you have bragging rights if you beat your own mother! 🙂
Word Bump! is a game we’ve been playing since Thanksgiving to practice our spelling words. Almost every time we’ve played it, we’ve done it a different way. He’s played with his younger brother (both using separate lists of words and only 2 dice), with me using words with specific phonics patterns, and this time…I searched through his Writer’s Notebook and took a glance at his independent writing pieces. I jotted down words that he was misspelling in his writing and this became the list we used for the game! (Hehe. I don’t think he even caught on.)
He was too busy grinning as he erased (bumped) my words and wrote in his color on top of them!
There are several reasons I love Word Bump! as a way to practice spelling words:
- It’s HIGHLY adaptable. (Both players can play with their own lists. Words can be sight words or phonics words. There are game boards for 1 die, 2 dice, or 3 dice.)
- It’s FUN and gets kids writing and reading their words without much whining. (A HUGE plus in my book!)
- It’s NOT a worksheet, but an interactive game.
