Letter C Books – Book List

These are some well-loved books for kids, especially young children, that feature the Letter C in some way. Although we don’t just read these when we’re learning about the Letter C, these would compliment a Letter C study.

Letter C Books

The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss has been renamed as It Won’t Come Up in our house. “Mommy, read It Won’t Come Up.” Love it! This book teaches kids to be persistent and sticking with it, even when others say you can’t do it. It also teaches the basic needs of a plant. All of this teaching is tucked right in without kids realizing it. The repeated phrase, “It won’t come up” is a favorite of my kids.

Cat’s Colors Jane Cabrera is one that I was introduced to as a Kindergarten teacher years ago. It is such a cute, little book that has the reader guessing the cat’s favorite color. It’s a GREAT book for teaching or reinforcing colors.

It’s My Birthday by Helen Oxenbury is a much-loved book for many reasons. The animals and the child all work together to make a birthday cake. It teaches cooperation and friendship and is a great book to compare to The Little Red Hen, as kids get older.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. is such a classic that it needs to be in every home. 🙂 The rhythm and the rhyme of it is pure genius. While I’ve also included it in our 26 Alphabet Book List, I’m including it under letter C because of the coconut tree.

Pete the Cat: I Love my White Shoes by Eric Litwin/James Dean is seriously infectious. “Do it again,” is heard in our home. I also think this book is great for teaching colors and the character trait {if you could call it that} of flexibility. The song is also addictive, in a good way. We recently discovered the book and song were on YouTube. So cute!

A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni features a color-changing chameleon, who is in search of having his own color. In this process, kids learn about colors of different animals {although I have to admit that some of the colors seem a little “off”} and the value of friendship.

Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar? is such a fun rhyming and counting game. Adding the book to it is just the icing on the cake. While there are different versions, the one pictured above is the one I’ve used for years.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is a classic that simply cannot be left off a letter c book list. 🙂 What a great book for teaching counting, healthy eating, and the life cycle of a butterfly.

Who Made this Cake? by Chihiro Nakagawa is about a woman who orders a cake for her son. A construction crew uses different kinds of construction vehicles to make her son a huge birthday cake. The text is simple, which is great for little ones, and it’s fun to look at the different construction workers and find certain ones on each page.

Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina is one that I’ve had in my “library” for many years. Every child or class I’ve read it to has greatly enjoyed the story. As the peddler naps, some monkeys take his stack of hats. Will he get them back and how? I love how interactive the story can be and how it can teach about emotions.

Cookie’s Week by Cindy Ward is about a mischievous cat who is always making messes. My tot and preschooler enjoy this book. I think it’s great how it also teaches kids the days of the week, but in a subtle way.

Cool Cars by Tony Mitton and Ant Parker was an absolute favorite of both my boys when they were 2-5 years old. All the books in this series about vehicles are educational and also integrate rhyme into them.
