My grandmother (Mama Jean), who just happens to be one of my most favorite people in the whole wide world, has a way of encouraging me to use my God-given passions every time she comes for a visit.
Now, this usually means more work for me :); but if it weren’t for her, I would never have adapted and illustrated the Christian Nursery Rhymes. (see example below)
The last time she came for a visit was no exception…This is an idea about 10 months in the making, but she encouraged me to write some phonics Bible stories and create activities to go with each one (the first ones start on roughly an end of K/beginning of 1st grade level and the next ones will grow from there). I put the idea on the back burner because I knew that ALuv wasn’t quite ready to take the plunge, yet. But now he is!
This is how I knew he was ready to give it a try:
- He can read/recognize a majority of the first 100 sight words from Fry’s list (or the majority of the Pre-Primer/Primer sight words)
- He has a firm understanding of short vowel sounds (can read and write short vowel CVC words without frustration)
- He has a solid grasp of blends and digraphs within short vowel words
- He still uses context to read words, but does not always need a picture to help him decode unknown words
So, the stories are written with controlled language (in regards to phonics and sight words) and the activities reinforce those skills.
We are giving the first story (God Made It All-based on Genesis 1 & 2) and activities a try this week. So, on Monday of next week, I’ll provide free printables you can download with pictures of ALuv doing the activities and a simple lesson plan guide, showing you how we spread the activities throughout the week.
I pray that you will be blessed by them. 🙂
Thank you for joining This Reading Mama on a literacy journey! That includes you, too, Mama Jean-I love you!
