A Heart Creation Writing Craft

By thisreadingmama Leave a Comment

This past week, we read The Biggest Valentine Ever by Steven Kroll.  At the end of the book, the two mice make something using different shaped hearts and it gave me a craft/writing idea for ALuv (currently 6.5 years old).

Like our Leaf Man homeschool activity back in the fall, we used different shaped hearts to make a creation and write about it…a great way to sneak in some extra writing!  This would also make a great literacy station/center in the classroom to integrate Valentine’s and writing.  If you have a preschooler, you could have the child dictate the sentence to you and you write it below his creation.

1. Together, we brainstormed things he could make with hearts, like a butterfly, a cat, etc.

3. He glued it down and added extra details to his picture.

4. I asked for two good sentences about his train.  He wrote: My locomotive is red.  My locomotive is going to the train yord [yard].  He found the word locomotive in a train book that was on a shelf nearby.

5. Finished product.  He was very proud and wanted to get NJoy out of his room just to see it…yeah right, not on my watch! 🙂
