I’ve talked before about the importance of ditching those unfaithful phonics rules and instead focusing on the more predictable word chunks, like word families or vowel teams. And that’s exactly what this vowel chunk spelling activity helps you do!
The goal is to help our young learners realize that words with similar sounds are often related to one another in their spellings. Knowing this helps them spell and read even words with similar chunks. For example, knowing the sound and spelling of oi can help learners read and spell words like joint, point, or even toilet!
These freebies come from my Vowel Card Phonics Pack, which includes TONS of phonics cards plus multi-leveled word lists!

FREE Vowel Chunk Spelling Cards & Word Lists
Last school year, my {now} 2nd grader and I worked through all the common long vowel digraphs {ai, ay, ee, ea, etc.} with our vowel team posters, vowel team clip cards, and vowel team spelling pages.
This summer, we’ve been doing a little more work on the vowel digraphs & diphthongs, specifically ou, ow, au, aw, oi, oy, and the other sound of oo, like in the word book.
I created some vowel phonics cards {7 free ones are included on the download}. On each card is the vowel chunk and a little image on the bottom right to remind kids of the sound it makes, like boy & coin. A key is included in the download so you’ll know what the key pictures are.
Also included in the download are word lists for each of the 7 vowel chunk spelling cards. These are labeled “level 1” because my Vowel Sounds Phonics Cards Pack includes 2 levels of lists, making differentiation easier.
We used these cards for some “chunk spelling”. Once he knew the sound of the vowel chunk, I called out words that had that chunk in them. His job was to listen for the chunk and spell the word. We used a dry erase board and marker so we could do multiple words, but you could adapt it for your uses.
My Vowel Sound Chunk Spelling Pack also includes level 2 words, like uncoil. Most of these word lists were compiled from multiple lists in the back of my Words Their Way book. While you could think of your own words, having them there for you is a time saver for sure!
