Teaching Silent e Words
Sometimes, the jump from short vowel words to silent e words is a bumpy road for learners. Here are a few resources that you can print out and use that will help make this transition smoother. Keep scrolling. There’s A LOT of resources included! You’ll probably find more than you could ever use. 😉
{Note, these kinds of words are sometimes called sneaky e, magic e, or CVCe words. All these terms essentially mean the same thing.}
Long Vowel Listening Activities – Before kids are ready to read long vowel words, sometimes it helps to just work on some listening activities. Are they able to tell the difference in long and short vowels just by listening? That’s what this pack is all about.
Focused CVCe Vowel Packs – There’s a lot here, so click on the links shared here to get to what you need. These packs were created years ago to help my oldest in his transition from short to long vowels. Included is a
Is it Sneaky e? Dot Pages – This is another great listening activity, but it includes the printed words, too. The bonus is that kids can use dot paint, which my kids are bonkers over! You can download the 4 free pages or grab a copy of the pack.
Magie e Words Pages – Two kinds of pages included with fun coloring that “magically” reveals the silent e words!
Magic e Activity Pages – These pages get kids reading, analyzing, dotting, coloring, and spelling those sometimes tricky magic e words. {4 free pages are included or you can grab my pack.}
CVCe Word Building Mats – This freebie includes two levels of word building. We like to use our favorite magnetic letters for this one, too!
CVCe Spell & Stamp – Pull out your letter stamps or letter tiles and spell away with these free silent e mats.
Long Vowel Word Study App – One of the most exciting things about this app, besides the fun games and activities, is that it can grow with your learner. There are 8 levels of long vowel activities, including silent e words.
CVCe Vowel Spin & Spell – Learning games can sometimes motivate even the most reluctant of learners. Several readers have already told me that what these Spin and Spell game boards have done for the CVCe pattern.
Roll & Race CVCe Games – More learning games. These also help learners compare short and long vowel patterns. {We have even more phonics games in this style, too!}
BOB Books Set 5 Printables – There are many CVCe activities in these packs. While they work great with the Set 5 BOB Books, you can use them separately as well.
CVCe Rhyming Word Blackout – Another fun game, this one gets kids reading and spelling those CVCe words. {6 different game boards are included, perfect for a small group!}
Write the Rhyme Magic e Pages – These free pages ask learners to identify the pictures and then write the rhyming silent e word below it from the word bank. 6 free pages are included.
Magic e Clip Cards – Learners can use their fine motor skills to clip the correct spelling of the Magie e words. Grab the 16 free clip cards or purchase the Magic e Pack with over 100 clip cards!
