This Reading Mama’s Suggestions: Stage 4 & 5

I only have a few suggestions, but here they are:

  • Continue reading to your child.  Yes, it’s still okay, especially if they still “let” you! 🙂
  • Non-fiction really tends to pick up in these older ages.  Study nonfiction text structures (see Non-fiction under Comprehension).  Understanding the text structure will really help them organize the important information from a text. 

 Word Study:

These two supplement books are GREAT resources for working with spellers in this stage.  They do still have a lot to learn about how words work:

Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Syllables and Affixes Spellers

Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Derivational Relations Spellers
