I have to admit, letter I books were much harder to find that I anticipated. It’s not so easy to find Letter I books for kids with words like iguana and igloo, especially when you’re posting a list mainly for toddlers and preschoolers! đ But we found 8 favorites that are perfect for the short i {like in insects) OR long i sound {like in ice cream.} See our other Letter of the Week book lists HERE.

Letter I Books for Kids
The letter I books feature the words: insects, ice cream, iguana, itsy, inside, and inch.
I seriously can’t say enough about this amazing nonfiction series from National Geographic! These books are perfect for toddlers through about the 1st grade. They are simple enough that young kids can understand it, but MUCH more can be added just by talking about the amazing and up-close photographs. And Insects by Robin Bernard is a PERFECT fit for letter I books for kids!
Wemberly’s Ice-Cream Star by Kevin Henkes is a great little book to introduce this worried character to the younger crowd. Worried that her ice cream will drip and make a sticky mess, Wemberly comes up with a wonderful plan and makes some ice cream soup instead!
Manana Iguana by Ann Whitford Paul is such a fun spin on The Little Red Hen. While this book may be a little much for a young child to sit through, I find myself adapting it just a bit {by not reading every single word.} I LOVE iguana’s facial expressions and body language talk about those a lot with my youngers.
The Itsy Bitsy Spider by Iza Trapni shares the many adventures of the spider. Did you know that there’s more to the story than just that water spout? đ This is also one of those great rhyming books that you can sing with kids.
Inside Freight Train by Donald Crews is a GREAT book for train-lovers. Kids will get a closer look INSIDE each of the cars of the freight train, learning tons of interesting facts. If your child is “out growing” Freight Train by Donald Crews, this is a great next step!
Bugs are Insects by Anne Rockwell is a great introductory book to insects. As a part of the Let’s Read and Find Out Science books {one of our favorite nonfiction series}, the text and images are simple for preschoolers, yet can grow with Kindergartners. And if your child is interested in learning more, there are some great activities and more resources listed in the book.
Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni is a book that is pulled out especially each summer when we find inch worms in our yard. This little inchworm demonstrates perseverance and creativity. No matter how hopeless it seems, he is able to get his way out inch by inch. {By the way, it’s also a great one to read when kids are older and learning about standard measurement!}
Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Willems is definitely a letter i favorite at our house! Gerald gets some yummy ice cream, but now has a serious problem. Should he share his ice cream with his best buddy in whole world or eat it? While he spends time contemplating and debating with himself about the problem, kids can watch another problem slowly unfolding. Love it!!
