Learn to Read: EN Word Family
Quick Note: I’m sharing about the activities from the EN word family a little differently in today’s post. The free activities are mixed in with activities from the bundle pack. So you know what’s in the free pack, I’m putting “{free}” beside those activities. You can find more Learn to Read freebies HERE.
Reading and spelling concepts have come slowly for my daughter {in Kindergarten} and I’m okay with that. I know that she requires support before she opens the reader for the first time.
One of the things we do before reading the word family reader {free} are our word family puzzles {free}. She puts them together, mostly matching up the pictures. Then, we go back and read each word. Sometimes, I’ll separate the puzzle and I’ll ask her to separate the sounds in the word, too like P – E – N. {This is a skill needed for spelling.}
On another day, we continue working on listening for the three sounds in each word with our Stamp & Spell page. She uses our letter stamps, then writes each word.
The EN word family activity page is another no prep activity that gets her analyzing words, coloring {her favorite}, and spelling words.
Each lesson only has 2 new sight words, but each reader includes review words, too. We also do several activities with the new sight words, like chanting them and rainbow writing {free} them. One of my favorite activities is the Roll, Read, and Find {free}, which helps with fluency and reading those new words.
I’ve posted the Roll & Race sight word activity in almost all our Learn to Read posts because she loves this one. I love that she gets lots of exposure to the sight words and that she’s writing them.
The dot mazes and word searches require that learners really focus on the spelling and order of letters in each sight word. I particularly like the dot mazes. {If you’re using dot paint on regular copy paper, it helps to add newspaper or scrap construction paper underneath to prevent bleeding through to the table.}
One of her favorites is also the Color it CRAZY sight word page. She uses a magnifying glass {not necessarily required, but fun} to find and write 6 different sight words from the picture into the Color Key.
Then, she uses her Color Key to color in the picture…crazy!
