Calendar Vocabulary Cards
Almost every morning, we gather together to have a calendar time. During this time, we talk about our day, read a story, pray, and work on calendar skills.
When asking questions about the calendar, MBug {5 years old} and NJoy {6 years old} are always getting the term “week” and “month” confused. I ask, “What day of the week is it?” and inevitably, one of them shouts out “September!”
So, I added some simple calendar vocabulary cards to our routine this year and I’m already seeing a big difference in their understanding. It only adds 1-2 minutes to our calendar time, but has been so effective!
All I do is turn over the cards and fan them out in my hand. Each one of them picks a card, reads it, and we decide whether it’s a day of the week or a month of the year. There’s also two “tricky” cards that describe a week and a month by telling how many days it has.
We quickly sing There are Seven Days in a Week to the tune of Oh, my Darling Clementine {I think I first heard this one on Barney} and The Months of the Year by Greg & Steve if a child gets stuck. These are songs they know, as we have sung them almost every day for the last 3 years or more.
By the way, We All Live Together, Volume 2 is older, but if you teach Pre-K, K, or 1st, it’s seriously a MUST! I used it every morning when I taught in the classroom!
The kids sort the word at the top of our table top pocket chart, which we now use every day for calendar time. {The other calendar cards you see in our pocket chart are part of a set I made for Free Homeschool Deals.}
I LOVE how little room this pocket chart takes up. We store ours behind a door in the schoolroom.
But one of my favorite features is the pocket in the pack of the chart, where I store the calendar vocabulary cards as well as the other cards.
