Books for the Letter U
The books in this list feature these letter u words: up, under, umbrella, unicycle {inferred}, and upside down.
Great Day for Up by Dr. Seuss is a rhyming book that features many meanings for the word “up” as the animals get up for the day. The words are simple and you won’t get tongue-tied {I promise}. It’s kind of fun after a few readings to count how many “ups” are in the book as there are well over 40!
If you have a child {or two} who like diging in the dirt, UnderGROUND by Denise Fleming is the perfect fit! It’s filled with creatures that wiggle in the dirt. She includes a creature identification page at the end, which is kind of cool.
Umbrella by Taro Yashima {the author of Crow Boy} is about a little girl named Momo who gets an umbrella and rain boots for her birthday. She is so excited to use them, but the only problem is it isn’t raining! When will it rain and will Momo get to use them? A GREAT book that also sneaks in the character trait of patience.
Bears on Wheels by the Berenstains is one of those out-of-the-box books that does not feature any letter U words, except that the main bear is riding a unicycle, which you’d need to point out. This is a quick read, but very funny, especially if you stop and take a look at the facial expressions on the bears’ faces at times. It makes for a great emergent reader, too!
Silly Sally by Audrey Wood is a silly rhyming book that I like to use when studying kids’ names, but it features in words upside down in the refrain, “Silly Sally went to town, walking backwards, upside down” which kids love to shout out or sing each time!
The Umbrella by Jan Brett is an endearing story, much like The Mitten and The Hat, in which animals try to cram under an umbrella in the rain forest. What happens when little hummingbird tries to fit inside? You can probably guess it.
