What are Consonant Clusters?
In it’s simplest term, a consonant cluster is a group of 2 or 3 consonants within the same syllable. Blends and digraphs are examples of 2-letter consonant clusters.
But sometimes kids come across those tricky 3-letter clusters, like spl- or thr-. These consonant clusters can combine digraphs and blends together. For example, shr- has the sh- digraph that is blended together with the -r. Clear as mud now?
Puzzles with 3-Letter Consonant Clusters
To make learning about these 3-letter consonant clusters a little more fun, I’ve created 7 different puzzles to go with these beginning sounds: scr-, shr-, spl-, spr-, squ-, str-, and thr-. Not only are there pictures on each puzzle card, but the word is spelled out underneath, leaving the place for the consonant clusters blank.
Work one puzzle at a time; or add an extra challenge by mixing up the pieces for two or more puzzles. Students have to sort the puzzle pieces by their beginning sounds. While this adds a fun twist, it’s also challenging!
